Secondary education

Secondary education

Compulsory secondary education (ESO) covers the age range 12 to 16 and continues on from primary education. The subjects taught cover a broad spectrum and the pupils' progress is assessed by a credit system. ESO is divided into two cycles covering a total of four years.

Those pupils who attain the corresponding levels of achievement during the two cycles receive the certificate of secondary education (Graduado Escolar de Educación Secundaria - GESO).

This qualification will allow them to go on to non-compulsory secondary education: the Bachillerato exam, for 16 to 18 year olds, and intermediate vocational training (Ciclos de Formación Profesional de Grado Medio), for the same age group.
